작가노트

2006-2013년 사이에 독일에서 활동하며 제작했던 작품들과 송은 아트큐브 개인전을 계기로 작업한 2015년 신작을 함께 소개하는 한국에서의 첫 개인전이다. 이 도록은 신작에 초점을 두어 제작되었다.

여느 개인전이 작가의 기존작이나 신작을 가지고 전시하는 것만으로의 전시이기도 하지만, 이에서 조금 더 깊은 의미로 들어가, 송은 아트큐브 개인전 지원이 어디로부터, 어떠한 이유에서 하는 것인지 연관성을 파악하고, 그 의도를 본인의 전시와 연결짓는 프로젝트를 구상하는 데에서 작업이 생겨났다.

다음의 내용들을 리서치를 통해 알아내었다.
재단법인 송은문화재단은 주식회사 삼탄(舊 삼척탄좌개발)에서 설립한 문화재단이다. 이는 고(故) 송은(松隱) 유성연 명예회장이 가정형편으로 인해 이루지 못한 화가의 꿈을 후대의 예술인재들이 같은 이유로 꿈을 접는 일이 없었으면 하는 바램으로 사재를 가지고 설립한 문화재단이다. 그렇기 때문에 장소적 이유로는 삼탄빌딩에 송은아트큐브가 있는 것이다. 이 내용이 작업과 조금 더 밀접한 연관성을 가지도록 하기 위해 (주)삼탄이 어떤 일을 하는 기업인지 조사했고, 이를 작업의 소재로 다루기 위해, 주요 사업의 근거가 되는 ‘석탄’을 작업의 재료로 이용하려는 생각에 이르게 되었다. (주)삼탄은 이러한 내용을 작업으로 다루고 싶어하는 프로젝트에 대해 흥미를 느껴, 작가의 석탄 지원 의뢰에 대한 응답으로 사내에 보유하고 있던 석탄 원석을 제공하였다.

이 작업은 ‘덩어리로부터 면으로의 해체’ 에 관한 것이다. 육면체에 가까운 석탄 원석 덩어리를, 사진이라는 표현수단을 통해 여섯 개의 면으로 분할하였다. 한 개의 덩어리에서 파생된 여섯 개의 이미지들은 각기 다른 지평면으로 확장된다. 이 이미지들은 감상자의 생각들과 연결되어 수많은 이야기들로 해석된다.

From the Essence is my solo exhibition held in Korea. The collection shown are selected works during my residency in Germany from 2006 to 2013 along with my new works especially prepared for the SongEun ArtCube exhibition. This brochure is largely focused on my newly showcased works.

It is usual for a solo exhibit to consist of previous and/or new works of an artist, but for this particular exhibition, I went a little bit further. The idea for this exhibition began with the investigation into how and why a solo exhibition of SongEun ArtCube gets funded, and precisely from where the funds originate, and incorporated this information into my project.

What I found, was the following:
The SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation is founded by Samtan Co., Ltd. (previously known as Samcheok Tanjwa Development). The late Honorary Chairman of Samtan Mr. Sung-Yeon Yoo, also known under his nom de plume SongEun, had to give up his dream of being an artist as a young man due to his family’s financial hardships. Much later in his life, when Mr. Yoo become a prominent businessman, he began the foundation with his private funds in hopes of helping talented and promising artists of Korea fulfill their dreams. An opportunity Mr. Yoo, himself never got. Therefore, for obvious reasons, the SongEun ArtCube is located in the Samtan building. In order to take a closer look and find a more intimate connection to my project, I delved into the nature of Samtan Co., Inc., which led to his idea to use coal - Samtan’s main line of business - as the subject for my work. Samtan was certainly interested in my project using coal, and was more than happy to provide the rough coal per the artist’s request.

I took a hexagonally shaped rough coal lump and dissolved the mass into six surfaces using the expressive medium of photography. The work involves the “dismantling of a lump into surfaces”, from which six images derived and become interpreted into an endless number of stories when met with the imagination and minds of viewers.
